“S.T.E.A.M. has arrived at Barack H. Obama Elementary School!”

By: Jamie Herr

Barack H. Obama Elementary School is both excited and proud to announce the launching of a new program this academic year. In addition to the current special subject area classes already happening at BOES, the creation of a S.T.E.A.M. Lab has been added to our course listing. S.T.E.A.M stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. In this class, students will use an integrated approach to learning that encourages students to think more broadly about real-world problems. This approach helps students to ask questions, make connections, problem-solve, think creatively, work collaboratively, and be innovative – all in an effort to ensure our students are effective 21st Century learners.

The S.T.E.A.M. Lab is conducted by Ms. Herr and is open to all students grades Kindergarten through 5th Grade. It is broken down into two different tracts. All students in grades K-2 meet once a week for one period, working on hands-on projects. Some of the projects completed to date are Super Hero Computer Coding Board Game, fingerprint art, and creating structures using geometric shapes they created using Play Doh and sticks. Week to week, these young engineers work on the Engineering Process: Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, Improve, and Reflect. This process will help prepare them to use the skills learned throughout the day in their academic classroom setting, and prepare them for the next S.T.E.A.M. tract.

All students in grades 3-5 meet for a double period once a week in order to work on marking period long projects. Our older engineers are currently working on designing and building Rube Goldberg Machines. In order to do so, they have had lessons on Newton’s Law of Motion, simple machines, forces and energy, as well as the requirements of Rube Goldberg Machines. Teams are currently in the planning and designing phase, and should start building next week. Through use of the Engineering Process, they will continue to ask questions, think creatively, work collaboratively, and be innovative.

We are excited to see all the innovative creations our Student Engineers will design and build throughout the year. This interdisciplinary approach is essential to ensure our students are keeping up with the current global technology trends. Successful implementation of this program will also help ensure our students will be prime candidates for the Middle School Dream Academy Program. Stay tuned for more information on Barack H. Obama Elementary School’s S.T.E.A.M Lab!
