Barack H. Obama hosted its second Bike Rodeo on Friday, October 19, 2018. BOES partnered with New Jersey Safe Routes to School, EZ Ride, and Alliance for a Healthier Asbury Park in an effort to conquer childhood obesity while providing a safe route to school. This week, BOES was also recognized by EZ Ride for their efforts in attaining Gold status for their program; the highest rank possible. The Bike Rodeo kicked off in the BOES auditorium, where students and parents attended an assembly on bike safety. All students in grades 3-5 learned that although bicycling is a fun and healthy family activity, that a bike isn’t a toy; it’s a vehicle. The presenters emphasized the importance of bike safety through various demonstrations such as how to properly fit yourself for a helmet, adjust your bicycle to fit, check your equipment, see and be seen, control the bicycle, watch for and avoid road hazards, use verbal and non-verbal communication, as well as to avoid riding at night. After the assembly, EZ Ride donated helmets to students in need that had completed forms to participate in the Bike Rodeo. At the conclusion of the bike safety assembly, students and parents that signed up to participate headed outside to hit the obstacle course. Participants used the safety tips learned earlier to complete a series of obstacle courses using bicycles, a tricycle, and a scooter. A great time was had by all. BOES can’t wait for our next Bike Rodeo!
